BTS is performing live on Saturday, 25th of April at 7:30 PM in the Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, CA. The boys glow. They are beautiful inside and out. Their stage presence, charisma, and kindness is so evident and unreal. They speak English throughout and occasionally speak very little Korean. Even at the end of the shoe — they linger as long as they can to show that they really love the audience. This really gives the fans the feeling that they are connected to them wholly and completely in that moment. Do expect a lot of fan-chants. Also — a word of advice would be to wear light, comfortable clothes for this concert and nothing too warm.

Take A Vacation To The Land Of The Rhythm, Colombia

Featured

Over the past five years, Colombia has experienced a tourism boom. With an increase in the number of flights to the country, an influx of hotel chains and the country’s peace negotiations settled, Colombia is becoming a major tourist destination. Its Caribbean beaches, Pacific coast, Amazon rainforest, Andes mountain range and desert plains appeal to a diverse tourist crowd. Colombia is full of unique and wonderful landscapes. Take a vacation to the land of the rhythm, Colombia and follow our guide to make memories that last a lifetime:

The Mavecure Hills

These ancient rocky hills in the deep jungles of eastern Colombia are barely known outside of the country, but are well worth the extra effort to visit. The jungles have hardly been touched by tourism and the views from the summit of the Mavecure Hills over the jungles at dawn are truly breathtaking.

Barranquilla Carnival

Colombia is the home of the world’s second largest carnivalafter Rio, the Barranquilla Carnival on the Caribbean coast. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience and an amazing party as well! In 2018 it takes place in February, so get booking those hotels now.

Buenavista and Pijao

The best up-and-coming destinations to discover the world of Colombian coffee, Buenavista and Pijao are a pair of delightfully off-the-beaten-track towns in the Quindio department, not far from the incredibly popular town of Salento. Buenavista is home to the excellent Panorama Café Hostel, and Pijao is the base for the WakeCup Experience Coffee Tour — perhaps the best of its kind in Colombia. Try and visit in July to enjoy the Yipao Jeep Parade.

Salt Cathedral

First constructed in 1816 by the miners working within the salt mine as an area to pray, the Salt Cathedral has developed dramatically into a major tourist attraction on the outskirts of Bogotá. Located in Zipaquirá, 32 miles (52 kilometers) from Colombia’s capital, Bogotá. The Salt Cathedral is made up of a number of attractions including a 3,000-seat cathedral, the seven stations of the cross, a climbing wall, 3D movie theater, museum, art gallery and café.

La Guajira

The vast Caribbean deserts at the most northerly tip of Colombia are home to some of the country’s most spectacular beaches, surreal scenery, and the best kite surfing in the country. There’s also the incredibly off-the-beaten-track Macuira National Park to discover as well.

The Choco Pacific Coast

The wild jungles of Colombia’s Pacific Coast region are some of the most biodiverse on the planet, and are among the best destinations in Colombia for nature lovers. Between June and October you can watch humpback whales, in September sea turtles come to lay their eggs, and if you’re less of a nature freak then you can always go surfing instead.

Caño Cristales

Caño Cristales, or “the river of five colors,” is located in the Serranía de la Macarena National Park. This unique and wonderfully colorful phenomenon is a picturesque sight located within a remote part of the country. The 62-mile (100-kilometer) stretch of river has beautiful waterfalls and natural pools.

Amazon rainforest communities

The Amazon rainforest is a vast ecosystem covering large areas of Colombia, Peru and Brazil. Visiting the Amazon rainforest is a unique experience, where you will witness communities living with nature and very few material items. Visiting an Amazon community is a life-changing experience; you get to see how villagers live with no running water or electricity. In the Amazon you can trek through the rainforest, visit monkey island, take boat trips and go fishing for piranhas.

Tayrona National Park

Tayrona National Park is located close to the city of Santa Marta, on the Caribbean coast. Tayrona National Park is a sacred area for the local indigenous community of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The park boasts some of the country’s most beautiful beaches, backed by the rainforest and the snow capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada.

Rosario Islands

The Rosario Islands are a collection of 27, predominantly uninhabited Caribbean islands, located off the coast of Cartagena. These islands are a protected National Park due to their coral reefs and marine life, which make for incredible snorkeling and diving experiences. The islands can be reached by boat from Cartagena’s port, and visitors can stay overnight in hotels dotted around the islands, or alternatively visit for a day trip.

Internet Surges 300% In North Korea Over The Past 3 Years

Featured

North Korea’s internet use saw a 300% surge over the past three years, as the country’s regime has continued to rely on cryptocurrenciesfor various activities.

Titled “How North Korea Revolutionized the Internet as a Tool for Rogue Regimes,” the study was releasedon Feb. 9 by Insikt Group, an intelligence arm of the United States-based cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. The report analysed North Korean senior leadership’s internet activity between Jan. 1, 2019 and Nov. 1, 2019.

According to the study, North Korea has continued to exploit cryptocurrencies as a strategic weapon, with the country’s political and military elite being reportedly involved in massive hacks of South Korean crypto exchanges, scams, cryptojacking, and crypto mining.

Along with illicit banking processes and low-level information technology work and financial crime, the generation and theft of cryptocurrencies have become a major tool to create revenue and circumvent international sanctions and regulations, the study says.

According to Insikt, the internet has become a critical tool for North Korean leaders, providing not only a source for revenue generation, but also an instrument for obtaining prohibited knowledge such as data on ballistic missile programs and cyber operations. The study also noted that North Koreans that are involved in cybercrime are often sent abroad to get advanced training and nuclear-related knowledge banned by the United Nations.

In 2019, Insikt continued to trace North Korean agents in eight countries including India, China, Nepal, Kenya, Mozambique, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh. Specifically, the intelligence team suggested that China and India are the two major countries that unwittingly host and enable North Korea’s illicit operations.

North Korean hackers have allegedly taken responsibility for a number of hacks and phishing attacks of South Korean crypto exchanges such as UpBit. According to data from the United Nations, North Korea generated an estimated $2 billion by hacking banks and crypto exchanges, as reported by Cointelegraph in August 2019.

Consortium Blockchain Explained

Featured

Blockchain is a piece of technology that was created by a pseudonymous group or individual under the name Satoshi Nakamoto. Satoshi arranged blockchain in a manner that was envisioned to facilitate a decentralized and trust less online payments ecosystem in the form of the digital currency Bitcoin. This has deposited the making of other digital currencies and assets which all utilize blockchain technology as a base upon which to build their various platforms. The most common type of blockchains are public, with the most prevalent being Bitcoin and Ethereum. Though, blockchain types such as a consortium blockchain are another thought-provoking application of Satoshi’s initial blockchain execution.

Consortium blockchains can best be understood when compared to their more popular counterpart, public blockchains. This type of blockchain is one that possesses no access restriction, meaning that absolutely anyone with an internet connection can become a participant of a public blockchain. More specifically, anyone in the world is able to read data that is included on the blockchain, and anyone in the world is allowed to execute transactions on a public blockchain. Importantly, there is also no restrictions as to who can participate in the consensus process for blockchains, which is the process that determines the individual or entity that can add a block to the blockchain. Public blockchains are considered to be fully decentralized, with control over the blockchain not being in the hands of any single individual or entity.

Consortium Blockchain

Consortium blockchains differ to their public counterparts in that they are permissioned, thus, not just anyone with an internet connection could gain access to a consortium blockchain. These types of blockchains could also be described as being semi-decentralized. Control over a consortium blockchain is not granted to a single entity, but rather a group of approved individuals. With a consortium blockchain, the consensus process is likely to differ from that of a public blockchain. Instead of anyone being able to partake in the procedure, consensus participants of a consortium blockchain are likely to be a group of pre-approved nodes on the network. Thus, consortium blockchains possess the security features that are inherent in public blockchains, whilst also allowing for a greater degree of control over the network. An example is Hyperledger is an open source collaborative effort that has been created to advance cross-industry blockchain technologies. Created by the Linux Foundation, the technical goals of Hyperledger are the following:

  • Create enterprise grade, open source, distributed ledger frameworks and code bases to support business transactions.
  • Provide neutral, open and community-driven infrastructure supported by technical and business governance.
  • Build technical communities to develop blockchain and shared ledger use cases, field trails and deployments.

Consortium blockchains are often associated with enterprise use, with a group of companies collaborating together to leverage blockchain technology for improved business processes.

6 Traditions and Customs From Malts That You Should Know About

Malta has its own traditions and customs that are still followed today. Whether you believe they work or not, many are meant to ward off evil and keep households safe. Here are just a few you might witness while visiting the island.

Source: Google.com

Maltese Treats

Source: Google.com

Figola, almond-flavoured iced biscuits, appear freshly made in bakeries across the island in the lead up to Easter. They are commonly shaped as symbols of Christianity, such as a cross, fish or heart. Alternatively, all year round, you can find Maltese sandwiches. This combination of tomato paste, tuna, onion and Mediteranean fruits, such as olives and capers, is usually piled on thickly cut Maltese bread. Add a little goat’s cheese for a delicious and healthy meal made in households and eateries across the island.

Early Career Choices

Line up relevant items in front of a one-year-old to determine their future career. If the toddler chooses an egg, a full house is on the way. Rosary beads? You have a future nun or monk. A pen? Maybe a lawyer, writer or notary.

Confusing the Devil

Source: Google.com

There are a number of churches across the island, and many of them have two clocks on the exterior of the belfries. It is perhaps advisable not to rely on these clocks, as only the clock on the right should display the correct time. This is meant to confuse the devil and keep evil spirits from entering Mass.

Attend a Carnival in the Capital

Source: Google.com

Although carnivals take place in several villages, the best are found in Valletta, with other villages not far behind. Dating back to the rule of the Knights of the Order of St John, these carnivals are among the oldest celebrations on the island. The streets come alive with brightly coloured processions of floats, costumes, dancing and music, and the celebrations last for four days and have no theme other than the brighter the better.

Turn Around Bad Luck

Source: Google.com

Many older traditional houses and barns have a set of horns above the doorway to keep out bad luck. If that weren’t enough, tradition also dictates that it’s bad luck to sweep at night. Any dust that has been swept from a house (usually by the early-rising Maltese ladies who are extremely house proud) should be brushed into the middle of the road and outside the home. Then, a line of sea salt is placed across the threshold.

Alternative Uses for Bread

Source: Google.com

Summers in Malta are long, so when winter hits, and it starts to rain, it rains a lot. Throwing a piece of Saint Anthony’s bread, ħobz ta Sant Antnin, into the road is said to stop a downpour. Offering the same St Anthony money will help you quickly find any lost objects. Leftover bread (of any kind) should be kissed before placing it in the bin.

Keep these traditions in mind when you vacation to Malta, with XcelToken Plus on XcelTrip to make memories that lasts a lifetime.

5 Places To Visit In Valletta Malta

Valletta is a distinguished city with a legendary past. The UNESCO-listed capital of Malta stands proudly on one of Europe’s grandest harbours, surrounded by some of the mightiest fortifications in the world. The city’s history is tied to the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, an 11th-century order that provided shelter for pilgrims in the Holy Land and took on a military role to defend Christianity. In 1530, the Spanish King, Charles V, gave Malta to the Knights. Once Valletta became the new military fortress of the Order of Saint John, the knights set out to create a capital city equal to Europe’s finest. The grand Baroque architecture reflects the knights’ stature as aristocrats from the noblest families in England, France, Spain, and other European countries. Valletta is called “a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen.” Today, Valletta is a real working city and a fascinating tourist destination packed with cultural attractions. Here are 5 places to visit in Valletta Malta, that we think you ought to see:

Saint John’s Co-Cathedral

Copyrights @ Google.com

Saint John’s Co-Cathedral reflects the wealth and importance of the Knights of Malta, who protected Europe and the Catholic faith from attacks by the Ottoman Turks in the 16th century. This cathedral, with its opulent, flamboyant Baroque interior, was built as a symbol of the Knights’ success. The nave features opulently decorated, ostentatiously gilded walls and gorgeous ceiling paintings by Mattia Preti, Malta’s most famous painter. The most renowned artwork in the church is The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist by Caravaggio in the Oratory.

The various chapels of Saint John’s Co-Cathedral reflect the different “languages” (regions) of the Knights of Malta who hailed from many different countries in Europe. Among the eight chapels are a few must-see highlights: The Chapel of the Langue of Aragon (the region of Catalonia and Navarre in Spain) features Mattia Preti’s painting of Saint George on a white stallion after slaying a dragon. The Chapel of the Language of Italy displays the famous work of Saint-Jerome Writingby Caravaggio.

Grand Master’s Palace

Valletta’s most monumental building, the Grand Master’s Palace stands in the center of Palace Square, which is often used for traditional ceremonies. Grand Master Fra Pietro del Monte commissioned the palace in the 16th century as a residence for the Knights of Malta. Part of the building is now used as the Presidential Palace, serving as the office for the President of Malta. The rest of the building is open to the public as a museum.

Tourists enter through an impressive courtyard, which leads upstairs to grandiose hallways with lavish 18th-century Baroque ceiling paintings. The enormous State Rooms are richly decorated with gilded moldings and works of art, such as a series of murals that illustrates a complete narration of the Great Siege of 1565. The Hall of the Ambassadors, also known as the “Red Room,” is adorned with portraits of the Grand Masters, who led the knights to victory. One of the paintings depicts the dignified-looking Grand Master Jean de Vallette, founder of the city of Valletta.

National Museum of Archaeology

The National Museum of Archeology is housed in the former Auberge de Provence, the historic residence of the knights originating from the Provence region in France. The building dates to 1571 and is a wonderful example of Baroque architecture. The Grand Salon is especially noteworthy, with its richly painted walls and wood-beamed ceiling. The museum’s exceptional archaeology collection tells the story of Malta through a chronological presentation. Exhibits include prehistoric artifacts and architectural elements found at megalithic sites, as well as ancient Roman objects and medieval antiquities.

The museum is renowned for its Prehistoric collection, an extensive array of artifacts from the Maltese Islands’ megalithic temples. These Neolithic-era archaeological finds include 6,000- to 7,000-year-old pottery, ornaments, altars, limestone statuettes, terra cotta bowls, and cult utensils. One room contains models of the five best-preserved temples. The headless “Fat” statues of the Tarxien Temples are displayed here.

Manoel Theatre

This magnificent little theatre was commissioned in 1731 by António Manoel de Vilhena, Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, to meet the local demand for operas, pageants, and theatrical performances. With this distinguished heritage, the Manoel Theatre ranks among the oldest theatres in Europe. The lavishly decorated auditorium features gilded box seats and plush velvet chairs. Every seat in the house offers a good view, and the acoustics of the oval room are excellent.

Visitors may take a self-guided tour with an audio guide. There is also an interesting calendar of theatrical events including music concerts and classic opera. For tourists, one of the most delightful things to do in Valletta is to attend an evening performance in this sensational historic setting. In January, the Manoel Theatre hosts a two-week Baroque Festival featuring the music of Vivaldi and Bach.

Valletta Waterfront

Overlooked by many tourists, the Valletta Waterfront is a popular spot among locals. The elegant Baroque buildings along the Marsamxett Harbour were once used as warehouses. The row of buildings was commissioned in the 18th century by Grand Master Pinto for the purpose of storing goods such as grain, vegetables, and fish. The doors were painted in different colours to indicate the type of contents stored inside; yellow represented wheat, and blue was for seafood. The warehouse buildings have been beautifully restored, and the pathway has been enlarged. Fringed with shady trees and leafy palms, the spacious waterside promenade is lined with trendy restaurants. This is one of the best places to visit in Valletta for an atmospheric meal by the harbour.

5 Awesome Places To Visit In Sibenik

Less touristy than many of the neighboring cities on Croatia’s popular Dalmatian Coast, which fronts the Adriatic Sea, and equally as charming, medieval Sibenik is the gateway to the Kornati Islands and is well worth a stop on its own merit. If the scenery looks familiar, and you are a fan of Game of Thrones, you’ll be pleased to know that the city appeared as a film location in three episodes of Season 5. Television series aside, the history here is compelling, dating back to the 11th century, and you’ll find numerous things to do. The beautifully preserved Old Town is great for wandering and filled with wonderful 15th- and 16th-century architecture. And with a location right on the Adriatic Sea, the weather in Sibenik is wonderful year-round, with mild winters and warm summers. Plan your trip with our list of the top attractions in Sibenik.

Sibenik Cathedral

Source: Tripadvisor.com

Sibenik’s Cathedral of St. James (Katedrala Sv Jakova), now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the Dalmatian Coast’s architectural highlights. Started in the early 15th-century, this grand cathedral took more than 100 years to complete under the initial direction of Venetian architect Antonio Dalle, a responsibility later passed to sculptor Jurac Dalmatinac and then to Nikola Firentinac. During the course of construction, a variety of styles were incorporated, including the Gothic lower level and the Renaissance upper level. One of the most noteworthy features is the exquisite frieze on the outside of the apse with its more than 70 unique faces representing ordinary townsfolk from the 15th-century.

The Old Town Hall

The splendid old two-story Sibenik Town Hall (Gradska vijecnica), just across the square from the cathedral, is well worth a visit. Famous for its beautiful large columns, arches, and balustrade, this superb example of Renaissance architecture dates from the middle of the 16th century and was built by well-known architect Michele Sanmicheli. Although largely destroyed during an Allied air raid on Sibenik during WWII, the building was completely rebuilt following the original plans after the war.

St. John’s Fortress

Source: Tripadvisor.com

During the 16th century, Sibenik was one of Europe’s best protected cities with no less than five fortresses protecting it. St. John’s Fortress is the city’s highest fortress, perched atop a hill some 115 meters above the city center. It takes about 10 minutes of huffing and puffing uphill to reach from the old town.

The fortress dates to 1646, when it was constructed to protect Sibenik from Turkish attacks. City residents were so terrified of these invasions that they assisted in the building of the fortress, which was completed in a record six weeks. The views from the top are also stunning.

The Church of St. Barbara

Source: 123RF.com

Just behind Sibenik Cathedral stands the pretty little Church of St. Barbara (Sv. Barbara), home to a small but noteworthy collection of sculptures and paintings dating from the 14th to 18th centuries. Built in the mid-1600s on the site of an earlier building, this single nave church is notable for its unique façade, with its irregular shaped openings, and a 15th-century statue of St. Nicholas by Bonino of Milan. The interior boasts two unique altars: one from the original church, and one that was built later but designed to complement the first.

The Dalmatian Ethno Village

Source: Tripadvisor.com

One of the newer attractions in Croatia, the Dalmatian Ethno Village provides a first-rate insight into the lives of the area’s local people through the centuries. Part of the Solaris Beach Resort complex, just a few kilometers south of Sibenik, it offers the chance to watch and learn about how traditional foods and baked goods are prepared, and then sample them afterwards as you wander the narrow-cobbled streets. Other highlights of a visit include checking out a 100-year-old watermill, craft fairs, weaving workshops, and an original olive press. You can also visit one of the pretty stone and pebble beaches at the resort while on-site.

XcelToken Plus(XLAB)?

XcelTrip

5 Awesome Tourist Attractions in Dubrovnik

Dubbed the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” the beautiful city of Dubrovnik offers a wealth of tourist attractions for visitors to explore. Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century and has been ruled through the centuries by the Venetians and the Hungarians, each of which have left their mark. The city enjoyed its greatest growth in the 15th and 16th centuries, a fact reflected in the impressive architecture and its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Popular for its spectacular seafront location on the Dalmatian Coast, coupled with its evocative and historic Old Town district, Dubrovnik is home to Croatia’s artistic and intellectual elite and offers numerous cultural activities and festivals.

The Old City Walls

The old city walls of Dubrovnik are one of its best-known features, now more than ever thanks to being featured in the hit TV series, Game of Thrones. Built in the 10th century and modified in the 13th and 14th centuries, these formidable walls — as high as six meters in places, and up to six meters thick — provided a solid defense against invaders. Totaling nearly two kilometers in length, Dubrovnik’s city walls make a great spot for a casual stroll and offer numerous excellent views over the Adriatic and inwards over the old city center. Other highlights include its two towers, the Minceta Tower (Tvrdava Minceta) and the Bokar Tower (Tvrdava Bokar), along with two forts, the Fort Lovrjenac and the Revelin Fortress. Access to the walls is through the main entrance on the left of Pile Gate (admission is charged).

Stradun of Dubrovnik

The spectacular Stradun — also known in Dubrovnik as Placa — is a place where locals and visitors alike gather day and night to watch the world drift by. Undoubtedly one of Europe’s most picturesque pedestrian thoroughfares, the Stradun boasts many cafés and restaurants and is a good spot to get in some shopping, or to rest weary feet after a day touring Dubrovnik.

Measuring 300 meters in length and famous for its white limestone paving, the street dates back to 1468, although many of the surrounding buildings were built in the 17th century after the devastating earthquake of 1667, when most of Dubrovnik was heavily damaged.

The Stradun’s unique homes are designed to enable residential living upstairs and business activities on the main level, and are notable for having their main doors and windows under the same arch. Just a few steps away from the Stradum on one of the side streets, War Photo Limited is a fascinating photography museum displaying images from the countless armed conflicts mankind has found itself caught up in.

Loggia Square

Loggia Square in Dubrovnik has long been a central gathering point for citizens and visitors alike. Featuring some of Dubrovnik’s most famous buildings and public monuments, this former market square is found in the northeast section of the old city center.

Highlights include Orlando’s Column (Orlandov stup), built and designed by sculptor Antonio Ragusino, as well as the famous Loggia of the Bells, dating from 1480 and used as an early warning system by residents in times of unrest.

It’s here you’ll also find the Church of St. Blaise, of interest for its Baroque façade and priceless collection of works of art. Also of interest on the square are a clock tower from the 15th century; the main guardhouse; the small fountain of Onofrio; and Sponza Palace, now home to the city’s archives.

Dubrovnik’s Gibraltar: Fort Lovrijenac

Dubbed “Dubrovnik’s Gibraltar” for its location on a rocky promontory just outside the city’s western wall, Fort Lovrijenac — also known as St. Lawrence Fortress — has long been one of Croatia’s most important fortresses. Rising an impressive 37 meters above the Adriatic, this stunning fortification proved impregnable during the many sieges undertaken by the Venetians from its completion in the 11th century onwards. Legend, in fact, has it that the Venetians themselves planned to build a fort here but were beaten to it by industrious city folk.

Also notable for its unusual triangular layout with its three terraces, Fort Lovrijenac is accessed via two drawbridges and a gateway through its impressive walls, in places as thick as 12 meters.

In addition to serving as a tourist attraction, the fort is also used as a venue and backdrop for Dubrovnik’s famous Summer Festival and its many theatrical and musical performances.

The Large Fountain of Onofrio and St. Saviour Church

Built between 1438 and 1444, Dubrovnik’s famous Large Fountain of Onofrio is probably the best known of the city’s many historic monuments. An easy stroll from the Pile Gate, this landmark structure is somewhat smaller today than the original due to damage caused by the earthquake of 1667. The fountain was an important part of the city’s original water supply system (also designed by Onofrio de la Cava) that carried water from the Dubrovacka river.

The fountain stands immediately in front of the equally attractive St. Saviour Church (Crkva sv Spasa). Built in the early 16th century in thanks for what city elders believed was divine intervention after the city was spared during an earthquake a few years earlier, it is in fact one of only a few buildings to have survived the devastating earthquake of 1667 intact. Today, this small place of worship is well worth visiting for its fine Gothic and Renaissance features.

5 Awesome Places To Visit In Split Croatia

On Croatia’s gorgeous Dalmatian Coast, Split is the country’s second largest city and a vibrant place that perfectly blends modern and ancient. It is also one of the Croatian cities used as a Game of Thrones set, and fans of the hit show can join an organized tour to learn more. The town was continuously inhabited for thousands of years, starting with the Romans, followed by the Byzantines, Croats, Venetians, and finally the Austrians, who only left in 1918, and you’ll find plenty of historic things to do in the wonderfully preserved Old Town.

Just east of its pretty waterfront promenade is Split’s main tourist centre, where visitors will find some of the top restaurants, entertainment venues, and hotels. There are also a number of wonderful day trips from Split that take you to other nearby parts of Croatia, like the ancient city of Salona and the beautiful beaches of Zlatni Rat, Brela, the Pakleni Islands, Solta, and Milna. Here’s a list of amazing that we have curated for your visit to Split Croatia:

Diocletian’s Palace

The spectacular Diocletian’s Palace is a well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site built in Roman military camp style, and a visit here is one of the top things to do in Split. Its basement also served as a set location for filming the Game of Thrones. Although Emperor Diocletian only lived here for eight years until his death in AD 313, the palace continued to play an important role as an administrative center and the governor’s residence. Three centuries later, in AD 615, the palace was used as a refuge for the residents of Salona when their city was sacked by the Avars. Originally some 215 meters long, 180 meters wide, and enclosed with thick walls up to 28 meters high, the palace was also protected by towers at each corner and boasted four entrances, three of note: the Golden Gate, Silver Gate, and Iron Gate. Leading in from the gates on each side, two roads are laid out according to Roman tradition.

Cathedral of St. Domnius

The Cathedral of St. Domnius (Katedrala Sv. Duje), lying within the ancient area of Diocletian’s Palace and originally Diocletian’s mausoleum, was designed by Filotas and consecrated in the 7th century. The cathedral has changed little since then, apart from the addition of a 60-meter-tall bell tower built in stages from the 12th to the 16th centuries (the tower can be climbed and presents great views of the palace). Laid out on an octagonal pattern and with a double line of columns — some of them Roman originals — this splendid Corinthian-designed cathedral also contains many notable interior features, in particular the Altar of St. Domnius and the 13th-century hexagonal Romanesque stone pulpit.

Day Trips to Zlatni Rat and Nearby Beaches

Just a short distance from the ancient city of Salona and an easy day trip from Split, the popular beach areas of Zlatni Rat, Brela, Solta, Milna, and the Pakleni Islands are well worth visiting.

Of these beautiful locations, the best known is Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn) on the south coast of Brac. Famous for its unique shape and formed largely from pebbles deposited here by wind and currents, this fascinating “spit” of land juts out into the sea some 500 meters, its shape changing a little each year. Overlooked by shady pine trees and the tall Vidova Gora mountain, the beach’s warm waters ensure it is almost always busy come summer with locals and tourists alike, all of them enjoying great swimming and sunbathing, as well as water sports such as paddle boating, kayaking, and windsurfing.

Klis Fortress

Located about 12 kilometers northeast of the town centre, the Klis Fortress is well worth a visit and can even be reached by city bus 22, which departs from Split’s local bus station. If you watch Game of Thrones, you may recognize the castle as the City of Meereen. The impressive fortress sits along a limestone bluff, which is 385 meters at its tallest point, and it’s used to control the valley leading into town. The fort is long and narrow thanks to its lengthy existence, which led to constant extensions as the centuries progressed. A small museum on-site features displays about the castle’s bloody past, as well as traditional costumes and swords. There is also a room dedicated to filming Game of Thrones, and visitors can climb over the fortifications inside. You can visit Klis Fortress and other Game of Thrones attractions, like the basement of Diocletian’s Palace, which served Daenerys’ Throne Room.

Day Trip to the City of Salona

About eight kilometers north of Split is the old town of Salona (Solin), a popular destination for history buffs. Occupied by Illyrians, Greeks, and finally the Romans, this ancient town holds many historical attractions within its ancient city walls, including its amphitheater, aqueduct, Bishop’s complex, and forum. Built by the Romans in the second century, the impressive Salona Amphitheater is designed to hold up to 20,000 people at a time and is notable for its underground channels, believed to have been used for staging mock naval battles. The Salona Aqueduct, built in the first century, is an impressive sight that is easily accessible and once carried water from the river Jadro to Split, ending at Diocletian’s Palace.
